Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is something frightening for many parents. There are so many questions come to mind when it comes to talk about this thing. If you are one of them, now it’s time for you to get the right answer and know how to avoid it.

SIDS sits on the top rank of death among infant 1 month to 1 year old. It is truly frightening due to the fact that it can strike without warning. Commonly, the deaths due to SIDS occur between 2 and 4 months of age and mostly happened to baby boys.

The risk of SIDS could increase due to several factors, including drug use during pregnancy (besides smoking and drinking). Poor prenatal care sits on the next rank of the cause of SIDS. If you are a mother who is younger than 20 years old, your baby has higher risk of SIDS as well.

The last (as well as) the popular cause of sudden death is stomach sleeping. It happens much more often than SIDS caused by overheating from excessive sleepwear.

Prevention

There are several things parents can do to prevent SIDS and the following examples have been proven to be the effective ways to minimize or decrease the rate. In United States, the rate even decreases more than 50%.

The first prevention of SIDS is to put a sleeping baby on his back. Do this every time you put your baby to sleep, either at night or for naps. Also, don’t forget to tell anyone who takes care of your baby about this.

Never smoke around your baby or smoke during pregnancy. Don’t doubt to warn everyone else not to smoke around your little one.

Another good way to prevent SIDS is breastfeeding and claims can reduce the risk up to 50%, although the experts are still researching how this could happen. Breastfeed your baby as long as you can. During breastfeeding, do not consume alcohol.
