Parenting Styles and the Impacts on Children (Part 1)

Parenting is not easy. Parenting requires consistency. Out there, moms and dads try to apply different styles on educating their kids. In this case, parenting style (believe it or not) plays an important role on determining child’s development.

Further, the discipline strategies parents apply is the clue to find the type of relationship they have with their children. In general, there are four different styles of parenting. Styles here refer to the approaches used by parents to discipline their kids.

The choice of parenting style is affected by various factors, including parents’ personalities, culture, life stage and also child’s temperament.

The first style is called authoritarian parenting. From the name, you already know that it is a parenting style where parents set the rules for the children and expect them to follow completely. Since the children should follow without exception, they almost do not have any chance or option to involve in problem solving challenges.

All the time, parents require the children to follow the rules and the most common answer used to answer children’s question “why should I do this” is “because I’m your parent, I asked you to do so” or even because I said so”. No further explanations or reasons given.

Now the question is of course about the effect of such parenting style toward children’s behavior. Since children are not educated to express their opinion or do not have room for negotiation, they can possibly develop self-esteem problem as they grow older. This condition later will lead to the incapability of decision making and problem solving.
