Tips for Raising a Confident Girl

There are a lot of things we can notice and use as the clue when it comes to talk about the difference between boys and girls. Girls are the early talkers, the A students and the social butterflies. However, there are times when we as their parents need to pay attention to the needs of building their confidence when confusing blend of new social pressures start to happen, especially somewhere between preschool and middle school.

Building daughter’s self-confidence (of course) requires time and commitment, but we are sure every parent will do everything to let their little sweetheart grow to be the great women who are always ready to face the world.

The first thing you can do is to encourage assertiveness. It can be started by teaching your daughter to express her needs, feeling and emotions appropriately to adults as well as standing her ground with her peers. When her friends being mean to her, let your daughter say that she doesn’t like the way others do that.

Encouraging their competence is also as important as the first point above. It refers to the commitment to let your daughter try solving their problems first (including when doing homework, of course) before asking the answer or solution to you. Encourage your daughter to try her best.

Teaching the daughter to ignore stereotype is also another good point to consider. Generally, people consider girls as weaker than boys in some aspects, so they (the girls) cannot do what the boys can do well. Tell your daughter that everyone has opportunity to do what they want, to achieve the dream and to do a lot of things for society.

Children and teenagers (whether boys or girls) do need role models in their life. What you need to do as their parents are to help them finding the inspiring role models. Sure, in this case, try to find female role models who have done a lot for themselves and for society. Let’s take public figures as examples.

When you accompany her watching TV, show her that women can do everything, can be everything including her. She can be doctors, news anchors, athletes, etc. Besides, you can show such figure through reading the stories with strong female characters. Good luck, dearest Moms : )
